An Interview with Jiro Saito (Benny Boomboom), Yoshiki Nakajima (Andrew Boomboom), and Fumiyosh Shioya (Laurence Boomboom) – Part 2

汐谷:L.A.

The second installment of our relay interview series featuring the cast members who portray the antagonists in STEEL BALL RUN JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. In this latter half of our roundtable discussion with the cast of the Boomboom family, the conversation begins with a look back at the scenes and lines that left the biggest impression on them.

The three actors also evaluate the character parameters of Benny, Andrew, and Laurence. from the unique perspective of having portrayed them themselves. How dangerous do Saito, Nakajima, and Shioya believe the Boomboom family really is?

▲ For this interview’s thumbnail image, each actor selected a memorable scene featuring their own character. Saito chose his shot saying, “He was so cool that I was genuinely surprised and thought, ‘Was he really this cool?!’” Nakajima commented, “I picked the moment when Andrew was shining the brightest. Everyone, please never forget the brilliance of Andrew’s life!” Shioya added, “For me, the theme is family love, so I chose the scene where he mourns his father’s death.”

Ready to Destroy Their Throats if Necessary: Pouring Every Acting Technique into the Role

— Which scenes or lines left the strongest impression on you while performing your character?

Nakajima: I was really happy to get the chance to perform a Stand. Each of us voiced our own Stand, but since the Boomboom family are the first enemy Stand users to appear in STEEL BALL RUN, I felt that their role in the story was especially significant.

The most difficult part was definitely the scene where Andrew strangles himself. On a technical level, I was actually holding my breath while tightening my vocal cords as much as possible to produce those sounds. Afterward, I was genuinely lightheaded from oxygen deprivation.

Andrew also required me to use all sorts of different vocal techniques and parts of my throat that I don't normally use. I rarely lose my voice from work, but this time I went in thinking, “If my voice gets wrecked, so be it. In fact, wreck it!” As it turned out, my voice was off for about two weeks after recording.

Saito: The direction was basically, “Just keep yelling while you deliver the lines!” So it's no surprise your voice ended up shredded.

Shioya: I was sore all over for a while afterward too...

Nakajima: I think I poured every acting technique I have into Andrew, except maybe whispering. By the way, that “My nostrils are flat!” line? I actually pinched my nose while recording it.

Saito: Back when Andrew was still healthy! (laughs)

Nakajima: Exactly. He still had enough energy at that point to shout things like, “Even my ears can fit into my ear holes!” Of course, even then, his fingers were already absurdly swollen. (laughs)

Shioya: He probably let a Spotted Salamander bite him on purpose just so he could get closer to Johnny and Gyro.

Saito: He's the type who pursues realism.

Nakajima: True dedication to the craft. Andrew might actually be an actor among actors.

— What scenes or lines stood out to you, Saito-san and Shioya-san?

Shioya: For me, it's unquestionably: “We fused together! I wonder how many meters of intestines will spill out! Maybe we'll set a new record for entrails!” Honestly, what kind of line even is that...? (laughs) You would never get to say something like that anywhere except JoJo.

Nakajima: That's absolutely true. (laughs)

Shioya: The way I see it, this family has done things like this countless times before, to the point where killing people has become almost like a game to Laurence.

Incidentally, there wasn't any particular direction for that line, but I asked to record it again. In that sense, it's memorable for me as well. I personally loved the line and wanted to pursue the best possible performance for it.
The JoJo recording sessions move at an incredible pace, but seeing Shogo Sakata, who plays Johnny, proactively ask for additional takes made me think, “I'm going to do that too!” So I jumped right in.

Saito: For me, the scene where Benny shoots Andrew in the stomach was unforgettable. The exchange of “Move a little to the right... that's it...” followed by BANG! was such a shock.
As a parent, it's absolutely awful (laughs), but at the same time I thought, “Only Hirohiko Araki could come up with something like this.”

Shioya: When you think about it calmly, that move is actually incredible. Benny's view is blocked by Andrew's body, yet he still manages to fire a perfectly accurate shot and get Johnny's blood onto the bullet.

Saito: That's true. Benny really is highly skilled.

Nakajima: If they hadn't let their guard down, they might actually have won. Honestly, this might have been the point where Johnny was most vulnerable. After this, he awakens to his Stand abilities and keeps growing stronger.

Shioya: If they'd defeated those three at that point, the Boomboom family genuinely could have had a shot at winning the race.

Saito: They were in a pretty solid position during the First Stage, after all.

Nakajima: When you think about it that way, it's really frustrating! They came so close.

— Please rate your character’s Danger Level, Coolness, Cuteness, Mental Strength, Intelligence, and Friend-Worthiness on a scale from A (Amazing) to E (Poor).

Andrew Boomboom (Rated by Nakajima)

Nakajima: For Danger Level, I chose A. He's willing to use absolutely any means necessary, and that's scary. There was no real reason he needed to strangle himself just because the medicine was anesthetic. The fact that he does it without hesitation shows just how unhinged he is.

For Coolness, I'd say D. He appears to be struggling with the equivalent of teenage skin problems (?) so I'd like to see how he develops in the future.

That said, the ribbon on his hat is cute, so Cuteness gets a C.

Mental Strength is definitely A. Someone willing to inflict pain on himself for the sake of his family has incredible willpower.

As for Intelligence, I'd have to give him an E.

And Friend-Worthiness is also E. Honestly, I don't think I'd want to be friends with someone whose Danger Level is an A. (laughs)

Laurence Boomboom (Rated by Shioya)

Shioya: I'd give Danger Level of Laurence a C. Normally he seems mild-mannered and gentle, but he also feels like the kind of person who might suddenly stab someone without warning.

Coolness is E, while Cuteness gets an A. Laurence's appeal is entirely concentrated in being adorable! Even the lipstick is cute.

For Mental Strength, I'd say C. He's a crybaby and tends to get frightened easily.

Intelligence is E. He occasionally says surprisingly insightful things, so I don't think he's naturally unintelligent. But he seems to lack common sense and basic social knowledge.

Friend-Worthiness is an A! He seems like the type who would constantly compliment you, so I feel like my self-esteem would naturally go up just by being around him. (laughs)

Benny Boomboom (Rated by Saito)

Saito: For Danger Level, I chose A. His abilities are formidable, and anyone willing to exploit even his own children in order to win is extremely dangerous.

For Coolness, I settled on B. Before seeing the finished animation, I was actually thinking of giving him an E because of how rough and crude he seemed. But then I saw the scene where he shaves away the steel ball it looked incredibly cool. I was completely won over. The artwork and color design were fantastic.

As for Cuteness, I think Laurence claimed all of that category, so Benny gets an E. (laughs)

I also gave Mental Strength an E. To me, he's the type who's lenient with himself but harsh on others, which feels like a sign of weakness.

For Intelligence, I'd say B. He came up with the plan and nearly cornered Johnny, Gyro, and Mountain Tim, which deserves some credit.

As for Friend-Worthiness... I don't think I'd want to be friends with him either. (laughs) You never know when he might decide to sacrifice you. Maybe he'd be fun once you got to know him, but based on what we see in the story, that's my evaluation.

— The Boomboom family's story has come to an end, but the race continues. Lastly, do you have a message for fans looking forward to what's ahead?

Shioya: I hope everyone enjoyed the Boomboom family's role in the story. Even more vicious opponents are waiting up ahead, and Johnny and the others will continue to grow into even cooler characters. Please keep watching their journey. And while the original manga is fantastic, the anime has its own unique strengths. I hope you'll enjoy it with all five senses, including the colors, sounds, and atmosphere.

Nakajima: We may have been defeated, but the story is still only beginning. With the introduction of Stands, it feels as though STEEL BALL RUN has finally become JoJo's Bizarre Adventure in the fullest sense. I hope you'll stay with the series and see where that story leads.

Saito: We were strong opponents, but even stronger enemies are waiting ahead. As Johnny and Gyro continue to become more powerful, I wonder if we'll also see more comedic villains like the Boomboom family appear along the way. I hope everyone looks forward to finding out what happens next.

Editor's Note

While choosing thumbnail images for the article, the discussion gradually turned into something resembling an improvised caption contest, much to everyone's delight.
For the images they selected, Saito added the caption, "I can shave down anything made of iron!" Nakajima chose, "Wow... are my fingers too swollen?" and Shioya went with "Shouting love on the Devil's Palm."
The three clearly enjoyed themselves throughout, bringing the same lively chemistry to the interview that made the Boomboom family such memorable characters.
