An Interview with Jiro Saito (Benny Boomboom), Yoshiki Nakajima (Andrew Boomboom), and Fumiyosh Shioya (Laurence Boomboom) – Part 1

汐谷:L.A. L.A.

Editor's Note

The second installment of our relay interview series featuring the cast members who portray the antagonists in STEEL BALL RUN JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. This time, we present a two-part roundtable discussion with the three actors behind the Boomboom family, the first Stand-user enemies to appear in the series.

In this first half, they share their impressions of the characters they portray and discuss the key points they kept in mind while bringing them to life. As they recorded together, how did each of them view the others’ performances?

▲ After comparing several different shots together, the three ultimately chose this thumbnail image, with Saito commenting, “The ones where we’re smiling are definitely the best!” Shioya imagined the family dynamic behind the scene, saying, “It really feels like a happy family gathering. This is probably what the Boomboom family is like in their everyday lives.” Nakajima added, “If they didn’t get along, the three of them wouldn’t be entering a race together!” As they spoke, they let their imaginations run wild about the family’s close-knit relationship.

The Theme Is “Family Love”! A Recording Session That Inspired One Another

— How did you feel when you found out you had been cast in the series?

Saito: I had appeared in the JoJo anime series before, and that role was quite impactful well. Then again, if you say, “There are only impactful characters in JoJo,” that's probably true (laughs) It had been a while since my appearance as the Professor in Golden Wind, so I was excited and wondering what kind of role would come my way this time. Benny Boomboom turned out to be another incredibly distinctive character, and I had a great time playing him.

Nakajima: I had auditioned for the JoJo anime series before, but in the case of STEEL BALL RUN, I hadn't auditioned at all. Then one day, I was suddenly told, “You've been cast,” which came as a huge surprise. JoJo is such a high-profile franchise, and being offered a role directly rather than through an audition is something that's extremely gratifying as an actor. I was really looking forward to the recording sessions. On a personal note, I was also happy that I got to play brothers with Shioya, who is a close friend of mine in real life.

Shioya: When we got the roles, we were messaging each other saying, “Looks like we're going to be a family!” (Laughs). For me, the word JoJo suddenly appeared on my schedule one day, and my first reaction was, “Wait, what!? Is this some kind of mistake!?” When I looked at the cast sheet, I saw the rather funny name “LAURENCE Boomboom” and wondered what kind of character he was. So I read the original manga and discovered that, even within this outrageously crazy family, he's an especially eccentric and absent-minded character. I found myself wondering how I should approach portraying him, and I felt both excited and nervous at the same time (Laughs).

— Could you tell us how you were first introduced to the JoJo series?

Saito: When the original manga first began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump, I was still student. Among all the titles in a boys’ manga magazine, its distinctive, dramatic art style really stood out. To be honest, my first impression was, “This looks kind of scary.” The Stone Mask especially terrified me... . So at the time, I didn't really read it closely. I never imagined that one day I would be involved in the series as a voice actor.
When I was cast this time, I read STEEL BALL RUN and found Sand Man to be a really cool character. I enjoy running myself, but competing against a horse on your own two feet is something no normal person could ever do! I definitely admire Sand Man's running ability.

Shioya: Like Jiro-san, I also used to think JoJo seemed a little intimidating. But when I was in junior high school, friend who loved JoJo lent me the Stardust Crusaders manga. I started reading it somewhat cautiously, but before I knew it, I had been completely drawn in by its unique style, world, and overwhelming energy. I ended up reading straight through it all at once. I remember imagining what kind of Stand I would have if I were in that world.

Nakajima: I actually discovered JoJo through the anime. By the time the anime adaptation began airing in 2012, I was already working as a voice actor, and even then JoJo was an incredibly talked-about title within the industry. You'd hear stories like how Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, who played Boy A in Phantom Blood, was supposedly told by sound director Yoshikazu Iwanami, “You're playing the most famous mob boy in the world,” which put a lot of pressure on him.
Because of things like that, I saw JoJo as one of those productions voice actors aspire to be part of. When I auditioned for a previous series, I was simply thrilled to have reached the point where I could audition for JoJo. And this time, actually getting to appear in it was incredibly exciting.

— What were your impressions of the characters you pLaurenceyed, and what did you keep in mind when portraying them?

Saito: Benny is the father of the Boomboom family, but to me he always felt like something of a small-time villain. He's crude, rough around the edges, and doesn't have any lofty ideals. His sole motivation is making money. At the same time, though, he's remarkably powerful, pushing Johnny, Gyro, and Mountain Tim right to the brink.
When performing him, I wanted to capture both sides of that contrast: his intimidating strength and his somewhat petty nature.

Nakajima: Speaking as one of the sons, listening to Jiro-san's performance in the studio made me think, “Wow, that's incredibly hard-boiled and cool.”

Shioya: I felt the same way! Also, in the story, the members of the Boomboom family are physically separated because they're using their Stand abilities. But during recording, Jiro-san was sitting right next to me, so I had this reassuring feeling of, “Dad's right here!”

Saito: That's a wonderful thing to hear! Though I'm sorry to say that this father is constantly thinking about how to use his children to make money... (laughs).
What's interesting about the Boomboom family is that the children possess qualities their father doesn't have. Maybe they inherited those traits from their stork mother? (laughs)

— Then what about Andrew and Laurence?

Nakajima: What stood out most about Andrew is the way he exits the story so unceremoniously (laughs). Because of that, I felt that I needed to pour absolutely everything into the scenes where he was alive and kicking.
For the first half of Episode 3, I approached even the test take as if my life depended on it. I thought things like, “I'll say every single ‘thank you’ differently,” or “When he's being strangled, I want the audience to feel like they can't breathe either.”
I put all sorts of ideas into the performance, but Andrew is such an overpowering character that he could absorb all of that and still have room for more. Playing a role with that kind of scale was genuinely the best.

Shioya: Laurence has a lot of bizarre, off-the-wall lines, but every now and then he'll suddenly say something surprisingly insightful. He's usually laid-back, but I got the impression that he might secretly be a genius.
When portraying him, I decided to make “family love” my central theme. Laurence has so many lines that show complete faith in his father and his brother Andrew, so I focused on conveying those feelings above all else.
From Johnny and Gyro's perspective he's an enemy, of course, but I hoped viewers might come away feeling, “Poor guy...” at least a little. After recording, Yohei Azakami, who plays Gyro, told me, “By the end, I actually felt kind of sorry for Laurence.” Hearing that made me really happy.

Nakajima: I've always thought Shioya had a fascinating voice, but with Laurence. He delivered something unlike anything I'd ever heard from him before. Even during recording, I was thinking, “I can't wait for people to hear this performance!”

Shioya: Thanks. We actually recorded this about a year ago, last October, so I've been waiting a whole year for people to finally hear it (laughs).
But honestly, the reason I was able to throw myself completely into Laurence was because of Andrew and Nakajima. Andrew makes such an impactful entrance, and Nakajima was already going all-out during the test recordings. Seeing that made me think, “So we're allowed to go this far.” In a sense, Andrew established the tone of what the Boomboom family should be.

Saito: Watching the two of them, I just thought, “These guys are absolutely wild!” They were pushing themselves so hard that it motivated me to step up my game as well.

Editor's Note

Throughout the roundtable, the three actors chatted in a warm and friendly atmosphere, displaying a level of camaraderie that felt very much like the Boomboom family itself.
When asked, “If you had the Boomboom family's Stand abilities, what would you use them for?” Nakajima answered that he'd use them to pull TV remotes toward himself whenever he missed them around the house.
Shioya replied, “I'm terrible with crowded trains, so I'd use magnetic power to stick myself to the outside of the Yamanote Line.”
Saito followed with, “I hate crowded trains too, so I'd use magnetic repulsion to keep everyone away from me.”
Nakajima immediately shot back, “Wait, you two have the exact same problem!?” leading to plenty of laughter.
